Welcome!

Stockholm Numismatic Institute - NFG

Researches and educates within the fields of Viking age- and medieval minting and coin circulation.

Stockholm Numismatic Institute (The Gunnar Ekström chair in numismatics and monetary history) was established in 1979. It is financed by the Gunnar Ekströms Foundation for Numismatic Research. Numismatics is the science of coins and other means of payments.

Our main research field at the Institute is Viking-Age and Medieval coinage and coin circulation. The aim of our research is to set coins into a wider context – economically, politically, administratively and socially.

Education and guidance takes place within the education in archaeology. On the doctoral level the thesis can focus on numismatics.
